The problem with learning about the world through pop culture and police academy movies is what we know of a country, or a city, often has very little to do with that place. the broad, amusing, colourful strokes don’t often take in the subtleties or a region, sometimes they even obscure it. in smith volume seven, we render mexico, ireland, new zealand, the former yugoslavia, england, sweden, nashville, new york and tasmania in slightly finer brush strokes. The big apple is honking horns and hectic change, but we found a quiet corner where john casey makes a living selling rubber stamps – and has done so for 30 years. we speak to hot sauce makers in mexico’s yucatán and learn that nobody in the cities has a siesta any more. we meet steel sign maker luke stockdale and discover there’s more to nashville than rhinestone cowboys. and scandinavia is meant to be gods, beards and hammers… seems that sometimes the brush gets it right. on top of that there’s tassie narcotics, a british interrogator, the smell of fear, archery and ira glass. pick up volume seven to take the whole trip.
