THE THING Quarterly is a periodical in the form of objects. Each year, four artists, writers, musicians or filmmakers are invited by the editors (Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan) to create a useful object that somehow incorporates text. This object is reproduced, hand-wrapped at a wrapping party, and mailed to the homes of subscribers with the help of the post. THE THING’s current year of subscriptions (issues 25-28) will begin with an issue by visual artist and graphic designer BRIAN ROETTINGER, continue with visual artist GABRIEL OROZCO, followed by visual artist and writer MICHELLE GRABNER, and end with an issue by artists and collaborators JASON FULFORD & TAMARA SHOPSIN.

Miranda’s issue was a vinyl pull-down window shade complete with mounting brackets. There were two different shades with text silkscreened on the inside of each. One shade read, “If this shade is down I’m not who you think I am.” The other shade read, “If this shade is down I’m begging your forgiveness on bended knee with tears streaming down my face.” Subscribers received only one shade. The process of selection was completely random.
