Dumbo Feather

Behind extraordinary ideas, there are extraordinary people. Dumbo Feather is a magazine about these people. In each issue, we scour the globe for those with the drive to make a difference. We seek out those who inspire us, those who excite us, and those who thrill us with possibility. Whether they’ve touched millions or just those nearby, what unites them is their passion.

This issue of Dumbo Feather is dedicated to those seeking refuge on our shores, in the hope of adding a human voice to what is becoming a very dehumanising conversation. Kon Karapanagiotidis spends his days working tirelessly at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Mariam Issa turned a life of oppression into one of community and connection. Julian Burnside fights to protect the rights of asylum seekers. Eva Slonim reminds us to look after one another. Fern White’s story is a familiar one of struggle and triumph, alienation and home. Thanks to their remarkable generosity, the issue includes illustrations from Oscar-winner Shaun Tan and recipes from Chris Nguyen. Each person we have featured has crossed oceans and fought injustice to bring us stories of courage, humility and grace. Their message for us is one of courage and action. Pass it on.
