A magazine about queers and cinema, mostly.

The cover of our bumper fifth issue pays homage to Boyd McDonald (founding editor of Straight to Hell) whose legendary guide to televised cinema, Cruising the Movies, is explored in depth by artist William E. Jones. Elsewhere, Erika Balsom turns detective to discover the truth behind Kenneth Anger’s missing films, Ara Osterweil watches Andy Warhol’s unseen film Three, and we feature interviews with Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behaviour), Abdellah Taïa (Salvation Army), and Michael Robinson (The Dark, Krystle). British artist Patrick Staff (The Foundation) documents his time at the Tom of Finland Foundation in L.A., Cait McKinney and Hazel Meyer archive gay porn, and Hollywood survivor Tab Hunter invites us into his video library. E.C. Feiss compares the two recent ACT UP documentaries United in Anger and How to Survive a Plague, and Andrey Shental introduces us to the work of Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe, one of Russia’s most significant performance artists. The issue also features works by artists Adam Shecter and Bill Thelen, a letter from Clara López Menéndez to cult Spanish director Iván Zulueta, plus an intergenerational conversation between academics Thomas Waugh and Ryan Conrad, who discuss the queer film canon, and an exchange between artists Zach Blas and Cassils. Jacob Korczynski reflects on the influential British artist, writer, teacher and curator Ian White, who passed away in 2013. Inside each issue is a set of temporary tattoos drawn exclusively for Little Joe by Mike Kuchar.
Canadian writer and curator Jon Davies joins Sam Ashby at the helm of this first co-edited issue of Little Joe.
