“Dyeing Message”

KRW 18000.00 — Released 5 November 2015

The fifth issue of DEAR magazine is out just now! As we always have, DEAR continues to probe into the question of ‘how fashion is made’ with its fifth issue, Dyeing Message. It is our attempt to capture the wide spectrum of messages that emirate from the process of dyeing, an indispensable aspect of fashion. We would like to open the chapter on natural dyeing with persimmon dyeing, probably one of the most familiar dyeing techniques to Koreans. We introduce to you Mongsangee, a brand native to Jeju island that has been dyeing using traditional methods for over twenty years, as well as Muldeurinae, another Jeju-based team trying to make the joys of natural dyeing available to more people. We also present ‘The Trees of Life’, a photo series featuring dye-infused nature of the island, and follow it up with the story of IISE, the first brand to apply natural dyeing to streetwear and achieve great popularity. The second chapter deals with synthetic dyeing. We sat down with TH Sample Tech that focuses on ‘sample dyeing,’ a type of procedure diverged from the history of Korean dye processing industry, met with UDI Trading specializing in a of t-shirt printing called ‘PCS printing’, and listened to the brand cohn who apply a painting-like dyeing process to garment design. In addition, our special chapter features Hurjungun, a bespoke denim artisan, Matthew Dolan, an up-and-coming designer, and a trip to Chai Fu, a Hong Kong-based fabric dyeing factory that retains the appearance of the 90’s, as well as Hong Kong’s first natural indigo dyeing studio Indigo 11.50. We also spoke with the designer Siki Im who used tie-dyeing extensively in his collection, and asked Document about its perspective on garment dyeing. You can see and buy our new issue at Unlimited Edition this weekend for the first time.
